Consumers and enterprises will benefit in terms of high bandwidth and flexibility.
Carrier-grade Ethernet in the first mile means an increased reach with speeds of 10 to 100Mbit/s in metropolitan and also more dispersed residential areas.
Enterprises, on the other hand, are looking for flexible service offers ranging from the replacement of E1/T1 lines to Gigabit Ethernet multipoint-to-multipoint services.
This can be achieved through the use of direct fibre connections, although the latest DSL technologies like VDSL and ADSL2+ also permit distances of up to 6km or speeds up to 100Mbit/s.
In the second mile, traffic is aggregated toward an IP/MPLS core for services such as residential high-speed internet access.
For services like LAN interconnection, VPN, peer-to-peer traffic, video on demand or TV broadcast, direct connectivity is provided.
A structured network and service architecture maps this variety onto a simple generic model.
This concept is implemented using VLAN and MPLS technologies, allowing a separation for security and service control, and the flexible provisioning of QoS and SLAs.
With advanced mechanisms for ring protection (ERP, RPR) and MPLS fast failovers, sub-50ms restoration times are possible.
Together with redundant nodes and network design, hitless switchovers and in-service upgrades, the required level of service availability can be guaranteed.
