STMicroelectronics has licensed MIPS Technologies' 64bit architecture for its co-operative venture with the Chinese Institute of Computing Technologies

STMicroelectronics has licensed MIPS Technologies' 64bit architecture for its co-operation with the Chinese Institute of Computing Technologies. 'The MIPS64 architecture has long been a preferred choice for major semiconductor companies around the world for its performance, cost and scalability', said John Bourgoin, President and Chief Executive Officer at MIPS Technologies.

'We're delighted that ST has joined our exclusive network of architectural licensees, and look forward to teaming with them as they continue building out their global strategy for innovative computing solutions'.

The MIPS64 architecture provides the essential foundation for robust, high-performance MIPS processors and offers upward compatibility to the MIPS32 architecture.

MIPS Technologies began developing its 64bit processor architecture more than a decade ago, based on the leading-edge RISC (reduced instruction set computer) research of MIPS cofounder John Hennessy.

Today, more than a dozen leading companies, including, Broadcom Corp, Cavium Networks, Raza Microelectronics, NEC Electronics, Sony Corp and Toshiba Corp, have successfully deployed the technology in a wide array of consumer and networking applications.

Leveraging MIPS' software ecosystem as well as their own design strengths, these companies are delivering innovative MIPS-based solutions that further extend the reach of the MIPS architecture around the globe.
