Analog Devices is expanding its industry-leading micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology to three-axis motion sensing

ADI's three-axis iMEMS (integrated MEMS) Motion Signal Processing technology will enable very small, low power three-axis (x-y-z) accelerometers which combine a tiny, robust motion sensor and advanced signal conditioning circuitry on a single, low-power chip. With two- and three-axis MEMS motion sensors, mobile phones and other portable devices can respond intelligently to position, orientation and movement.

For consumers who are demanding products that are easier and more fun to use, functions can now be controlled by hand movements instead of complex keypads.

Applications cover a broad range of possibilities, from game interfaces, interactive maps, and pedometers to less visible functions such as protecting shock-sensitive components such as hard disk drives and increasing battery life by intelligently managing power consuming functions.

'In 1998, Analog Devices was the first to introduce motion and tilt sensing for consumer products with the ADXL202, the first low-g single-chip, dual-axis accelerometer in video game controllers', said Bill Giudice, Vice President and General Manager, Micromachined Products Division, Analog Devices.

'Today, ADI's iMEMS Motion Signal Processing technology can be found throughout consumer applications in notebook computers, cellular handsets, health devices, and sports equipment to name a few'.

By combining patented design and manufacturing techniques with field proven iMEMS technology, the new three-axis accelerometers will feature an innovative MEMS sensor structure capable of detecting simultaneous accelerations along the x, y and z axes and integrating the sensor with advanced signal conditioning circuitry on a single die.

ADI's iMEMS technology has been used to manufacture over 180 million accelerometers since 1993 and demonstrates a proven ability to respond rapidly to the volatile demand of high volume consumer product OEMs.

With a low-g accelerometer roadmap addressing portable consumer device requirements for less board space, low power consumption, high shock survivability, and stable performance over temperature, the first three-axis products will be offered in a small 4 x 4 x 1.45mm easy-to-use surface mount package.

Since the introduction of the ADXL202, Analog Devices has continued to optimise low-g motion signal processing for value-conscious consumer markets.

The two-axis ADXL311 was the first MEMS accelerometer used in high volume products such as notebook computers.

In 2004, the two-axis ADXL320 set a new standard for a wide variety of portable device applications with a unique combination of small, thin packaging, low power consumption, and exceptional performance.

As demand continues to grow for two-axis motion- and tilt-sensing, three-axis sensing will accelerate MEMS adoption by expanding designers' options even further.
